Recently, at a Lexington Comic and Toy Convention, Jason David Frank stated that he would like to see a Power Rangers movie made in a darker tone to the series and that he thinks it could work in the style of Batman or something similar. This may mean nothing, except for the fact that Jason David Frank is the best Power Ranger to ever grace the series; he is Tommy Oliver, green ranger, white ranger, red ranger and black ranger. He is an absolute legend. So could a Power Rangers movie work?
Children all over the world from Japan to the USA to Britain have grown up with the Power Rangers, it is one of the longest running series’ on television and has been running every year since the original series was shown way back in 1993. The fact that the series is still being made proves its popularity among younger audiences but is that really reasoning enough to turn it into a big film franchise. Well why not?
Film executives and studio big wigs nowadays seem to focus on the money aspect of things and there is no doubt that with the Power Rangers popularity and the merchandising deals that could be made, the films could bring in a lot of money. The only problem is in attracting older audiences. I believe that some people, like myself, will remember growing up with the characters and would go and see a film if it was made for sentimental reasons if nothing else.
The Power Rangers is a classic story of good and evil, every series and every episode follows the same strict formula. There is no reason why this formula could not transfer onto the big screen. Hollywood audiences love a good battle between the forces of good and evil as we have seen with Harry Potter and the recent trend of superhero films. And on that note, why not give the series a try as a film whilst audiences are obsessed with superheroes, there’s nothing to lose.
There is no reason why Power Rangers could not be made darker for a more mature audience either. With Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles getting a reboot and the Transformers trilogy being made, why not try adapting another children’s classic for a more mature audience. Set the tone darker, keep the fight between good and bad, but add more adult themes. It would work!
I, for one, would love to see a new team of Power Rangers on the big screen and there are a lot of young, talented actors coming through that could be given their big break in a film of this nature. But if a big budget Power Rangers movie does ever get made, Jason David Frank deserves at least a cameo!
Considering some of the superhero movies that have actually gotten made, it is a little surprising that they haven’t gone back to the Power Rangers franchise for a third movie. Or would it be fourth? I remember there being the first movie and I thought Turbo got a movie, no idea about any others.
Yeah it would be the third of the franchise. Both Mighty Morphin’ and Power Rangers Turbo had a film but there haven’t been any more since then. And like you said, with the amount of superhero films getting made, you wouldn’t be surprised if the Power Rangers had another shot at it.
I think a movie could work. But we need to address several issues to make it a good one. Up until now there have been a team of 5 or 6 usually together to stop evil villains. Now is the time as pointed out, LOTS of this stuff is getting converted or made into movies. I like the darker scenario idea. But to do it right we have to make things not so black and white. See up until now outside of some cases its been two sided. We need to work the personal side like in PR Space. the lines broke down when they realized that the red ranger was Astromina’s brother. It made it personal. But the idea of 5 working together gives it LIGHT. All alone is danger. Jason David Frank could be a good person for it. Basically what I’m saying is making him a ranger in a case where the danger feels personal, and he alone chooses to act. One Source of power. So its not just him saving the day. Give it some Vindication. But we can’t do it in a way that has been DONE. You know lovers spat, girlfriend is killed, or parents. Do something NEW. In Fact make it so the invader feels personal loss and there around for Revenge. This time don’t keep the kids in mind, make it so its boardering PG-13 and R. I have one idea on an enemy who has Personal revenge who might want it. So instead we have 2 parties, both wishing to strike at one other. See in the series, they wait often and attack only when necessary. Make it so the good guy wants to strike. This hasn’t been done effectively ever. Having both parties want to attack another. Also make it so the Enemy doesn’t hide like oh say on the moon or something. Make it so there down here. They can Come from Someplace else, just make it so they blend in. Also make it so they have other goals than destruction. Another words dispose of the Black and White. And give the ranger a name that is less basic than White. Sometimes they work in that direction. Sense the ranger is 1, and 1 ALONE. He can select a name after an event. Jason David Frank has the physic to play such a person, the look of a dark rogue. Why Not?
Oh yeah, I want the Hero to NOT be a ray of light that everyone sees in the scenario. I want them to HAVE concern. For instance, what if the hero was pissed off with anger he would get drunk at home or throw a statue or something like that? Hes fighting with TRUE raw emotion. In fact make it so the police want to stop them both.
